Meet the Revolution

Ein Film von Christoph Albert und Alexander Buchs
"Meet the Revolution" war eine Veranstaltungsrundreise der Fraktion DIE LINKE., die zwischen dem 30. Oktober und dem 04. November 2006 in Berlin, Leipzig, Freiburg, Frankfurt/ Main und Bremen gastierte.
Mercedes Condori Quispe (Bolivien) und Freiman Paez Garcia (Venezuela) berichten von ihren politischen Kämpfen und Erfolgen, diskutieren mit Zuschauern und Abgeordneten. Ein Kamerateam begleitete sie auf ihrer Reise durch Deutschland.
Das Ergebnis ist eine spannende und unterhaltsame Dokumentation, die Parallelen und Unterschiede zwischen der Situation in Südamerika und Deutschland aufzeigt, Denkanstöße bietet und zum Handeln einläd.

This documentary consists mostly of interviews with working-class Venezuelan women and men, including a few long-time left activists, talking about how they have been affecting and affected by the changes in Venezuela since the election of Hugo Chavez. It will disappoint those looking for "balance" between revolutionary and counter-revolutionary views, but will be of great interest to those interested in understanding the accomplishments and limitations of the Bolivarian process. It also has some nice musical interludes to prevent information overload. The full title of the original DVD is Venezuela Von Unten/Venezuela From Below/Venezuela Desde Abajo. The audio is all in Spanish, but the German and English versions are subtitled and captioned -- very professionally -- in the respective languages. The version presented here is with English subtitles. The videomakers are Dario Azzellini, a journalist and long-time Berlin resident, and Oliver Ressler, a Viennese artist working largely in video and installations. They have recently released a new DVD, "5 Factories: Worker Control in Venezuela" (also in three languages). Their web sites are at http://www.azzellini.net/ and http://www.ressler.at/. Es sollte wohl eine einfache Doku über 'die Revolution', den Wandel des Landes Venezuelas (80% der Menschen lebten in Armut bzw. profitierten nicht von dem natürlichen Reichtum des Landes; eine sehr kleine 'Elite' zog umso größeren 'Nutzen' daraus) und über Chavez werden. Chavez wollte sicherlich einfach Werbung für seine Sache machen. Doch dann kam es ein bißchen anders. Es gab einen Putsch gegen ihn.

Presented at Globians Film Festival 2005: Venezuela Bolivariana: People and Struggle of the Fourth World War by Marcelo Andrade Arreaza examines the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela as connected to the world-wide movement against capitalist globalization. The film shows the evolution of the popular movement in Venezuela from the 'Caracazo' riots of 1989 to the massive actions that brought revolutionary president Hugo Chavez back to power, 48 hours after a U.S.-led military coup in 2002. The film ends with an epilogue that show the next steps that the Venezuelan people are taking, not only to fight against the oligarchy and imperialism, but to exercise what is called in the popular movement: Revolution within the Revolution. The focus of this 76 minutes documentary is how the Bolivarian Revolution, thanks to its incredible grassroots and networking power, is a revolution that transcends the national frontiers of Venezuela and contributes with concrete alternatives to the fight against neoliberal capitalism.
